Not necessarily. Bread is actually more likely to cause weight gain. The glycemic index (GI) ranks foods on a scale of one to 100 according to how much they cause blood sugar to spike. (High-GI foods spike blood sugar, and when the levels crash, you may feel ravenous, leading to overeating and eventual weight gain.)
While a slice of white bread can have a GI value as high as 80, spaghetti's value is 44. Why? Most pasta is made from a different type of wheat (called durum), which isn't turned into blood sugar as easily. Tip: To help maintain pasta's low GI, cook it al dente.
